I'm real happy about this painting. For me, a Japanese food theme was exciting. I thought of several different option, but when it got down to it, I thought, who doesn't like Teriyaki. It's great combination of salty and sweet, kind of like a Shiba Inu.

The only difficulty in a painting of a dog like this is their a wide variation of coloration. it seems most are reddish orange and off white, but there are dark brown ones also. So what I did is combine some of both. I think the dark patches also make for a more interesting painting.

The Japanese on the bowl reads Shiba Inu.

Labrador Chocolate Ale

What is particularly exciting about the original is that I donated it to my local Humane Society (King County Humane Society) for their Tuxes and Tails auction that was held last weekend. I've finish my English Bull dog and he's back from the photographer. Painting his big massive head was interesting. I had never painted one of these guys before. I am really happy with the antique yellow background color. The original of this is available as are limited edition prints and custom prints.

I've already started on my next major painting. It is a Chocolate Lab and the title is "LABRADOR CHOCOLATE ALE" My "LABRADOR PALE ALE", a yellow lab and "LABRADOR DARK ALE" have been quite popular. I'll have my Labs and their beers done. Funny, I rarely drink beer.

I'll be donating this painting to my local Humane Society's "Tuxes and Tails" auction. Buy it there and it''s a tax write off.

A little about our doghter (daughter) Scout:
Scout loves to be at eye level! Especially if we are having a conversation or on the computer. She has to sit and look at you at eye level. She loves treats!! Scout is not a great eater, but put 3 different type of treats on the floor in front of her and she will sniff each one about 2/3 times and then decide which one to take. We don't give her human food, but when the pizza guy shows up she goes crazy. She loves pizza! Scout loves humans hates/dislikes dogs. It just seems that she couldn't be bothered by them.

Scout is a Shih Tzu. It will be my second Shih Tzu painting.

"We really really really love this! It is so great and has totally captured their personality ("Heeeeyyyy Sophie, let's use THIS container!") They are bananas. We love how you included Sophie's black markings on the front of her legs...we call those her shin guards, lord knows she needs them! Marco too, all the colors on his head and the faint black spots, and his eye color. Thanks so much!"

I can set back and enjoy this for about ten minutes and its off to the next painting, also a commission. The pup is a Shih Tzu named Scout.

My great custom from Sydney, Australia Sally Watkins got a new Pug puppy and named it Pugsly and she had me do a custom print for Pugsly. So much fun.

A commissioned painting is wonderful. They're timeless and the make grand statements, but they are a little expensive for most people. These custom prints are a fantastic art product. For relatively little money, someone can have a personal unique piece of art. The next step up is a custom small painting.

I've seen some of the new fall line of handbags by ProjectArt with my images on them. They've done a great job. Great look and feel to them. Nice quality for the price. A few weeks ago I sent them art for their spring line. Included is a horse image. I used to paint horses a lot, but this will be my first as advertising style art.

The is was a fun painting to do. I'm excited about the product, Irish Soda Bread, sometime known as Wheaten Bread. This bread and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are from Northern Ireland originally. The dog and the bread were of the peasants. Nobility didn't tend to have this breed.

I also love the profile of these guys. And now I'm realizing I'm painting most of my dogs lately in profile because dog profiles and noses are fun and interesting.

The painting is going to be used by my licensing partner ProjectArt LLC for handbags and shoes.

I've made this bread before. It is easy and real good. It doesn't use yeast so there is no worrying about the rise.

White Poodle

I'm very soon going to be starting a White Poodle painting at the request of two of my licensing partners. These licensing partners produce products ranging from purses and shoes sold at fine boutiques to broadly distributed art products such as metal signs.

The painting will be a White Poodle advertising French Lavender Soap. The size is 48" x 36" and the background is primarily going to be a coral color.

I bring this up because at this time, the title lettering will be POODLE BRAND - FRENCH LAVENDER SOAP. If you or you know someone who would be interested in being part of this project, I can paint it with your dog's name in the title line. For example if your dog's name is Genny, then the painting would read "GENNY'S BRAND - FRENCH LAVENDER SOAP". The products, however, would say "POODLE BRAND".

But if you have a white poodle, it can be the model and he or she would be on the products.

You will also receive several limited edition prints of the original painting with your dog's name.

Project Art Licensing

It's exciting when something that you started working on about nine months ago finally comes to fruition.

Last June I was contacted by the principals of a new company named Project Art and they wanted to license my images for purses, handbags, shoes and similar products. The two company owners are long time veterans of this industry.

I'm very interested in licensing, but never considered these product types for my work. They convinced me it would work and we began the process.

i didn't want to mention this on my blog or web-site because projects such as this can end for many reasons and getting the actual product in the stores takes quite a while. Mock-ups need to be made, the company needs to secure enough sales to justify production and then finally production and placement for retailer's spring lines. Many products take this long or evan longer to develop and merchandise.

Last week, I finally got to see these photos of product in the store and within a few days, I'll receive some live samples. - I can't wait. The store in this photo, Robert's Fine Shoes, is located in Palm Desert, California, a very nice location. What I'm humbled by is that many of these retailers are carrying high end lines, such as Donald Pliner, Judith Leiber, Taryn Rose, Stuart Weitzman, Bruno Magi and Cole Han.

These products with my images on them are available in several dozen store across the country and while not a huge number, I'm assured that it's pretty good for a new look and with a new company, particularly in the current economy. Let's hope demand swells and more and more stores pick-up this line.

This painting was fun to do. Beagles are so funny. Their noses are amazing. Their digging legendary. We had a dog (Little guy) that was part Beagle and something that left him with short legs. We got him from my inlaws when he was about 14 - 15 years old. His hearing and sight diminished, his sense of smell was till at his peak. He would be up stairs in his bed and if you pulled a carrot out of the fridge, he would show up. And while he wasn't the smartest dog in the pack, to say the least, he was brilliant at getting food when he wanted it. And when old and hobbled, he was an acrobat at getting at food. He was also a charmer. He was the dog everyone would go to when we took him to the pack to the vet.

I was at a party on Lake Washington last week and the next door neighbor had two lab mixes. At one point, I saw one of his guys riding on his ski-doo like this for fifteen minutes or so. After awhile he lets the first dog off and then this second one gets on and they ride for awhile (he patiently waited his turn).

I ask the guy how this came about and he said that he was working on the front end of the machine one day, looked up and one dog was sitting on seat with a look that said, "let's go". He was a natural. Later, the second dog, after observing the first dog getting a ride, hoped on. Love those pups.

This is my most recent Dog of The Day "Café Ridgeback" Like all other Dog of The Days, it measures 14" x 11" and is an original painting on gallery wrapped canvas. It is ready to hang. This is my first Rhodesian Dog of The Day. It's based on my larger commissioned painting "Rascal Brand Energy Bars - the image above. Rascal (a very hansom boy) was the beloved friend of Patricia Powers of Northern California. Rascal died a few years ago, but I hope the painting makes her smile today.

Later the painting was altered to read "Rhodesian Brand" - top image - so people will be looking and smiling at Rascal for many many years and Rascal will remind them of their pup.

France trip

Back from France.

It was great. We spent a few days touring Normandy and Brittany and then stayed in a rented house in the Cher River Valley with friends Ralph and Elizabeth Bincarowksy (close to the Loire Valley) and rented bikes - they were clunkers and hills were killers. We did some great long rides in the country side. Terri and I finished the trip with a few days in Paris.

In the past we did the museum explorations and this trip was about walking neighborhoods and some some shopping. Terri had put off buying here to shop there and so on Thursday, April 30th we scoped out a bunch of stores and planned to buy Friday, the 1st of May. Well, we didn't realize that May 1st - May Day - is the equivalent of Labor Day here, but with all retail closed. No shopping and we left early Saturday. The customs people raised a little eyebrow when we had nothing to declare after two weeks.

Highlights and very few low lights.

French countryside is beautiful. Many, many farms. The mustard was in bloom and there would be these great swaths of yellow.

Normandy and the D-Day museum and battle sites were very emotional - unimaginable.

Mt. Saint Michel. So beautiful to look at, seemed to be somewhat of a tawdry tourist-trap once there. The main street is lined with curio shops and so-so restaurants. The actual Abby is interesting. All crowded.

People in France are extremely nice, very warm and very helpful. In Paris you can run into a few cool people, but I think it's because they are big city people who have to deal with us tourists. Also, they don't care if you are American or from the moon. Additionally, they don't know the difference between an English accent, various American accents or any other English accents. I can't tell the difference between Belgian French, French French or any other.

Drivers are generally courteous.

Dogs are everywhere, especially in the country. When we were riding, we were constantly serenaded with there barks. Made us miss our guys.

The Lilacs and Wisteria were in bloom (and there was a lot of it) so many great smells.

The farmers markets were great. I wanted most of it.

Food, of course, can be great. But there is also a lot of mediocre food, even in restuarants full of locals. French Fries every where. And the steak with Pomme Frites can be tough, grissly and flavorless. Salads are great. A lot of good pizza. I do like restaurants that let you linger. They let you sit as long as you like. Coffee is fantastic. Wine is cheap. You can find nice local wines for about two Euros. The bitter and milk is sweet and wonderful and what do I need to say about the cheese and bread. We OD on pasties.

If you are a gardener you would enjoy Chateau Villandry - not too far from Tours. Amazing gardens.

We flew Air France (second trip on them). Nice airline and for us quite convenient. Non-stop.

Paris is so crowded. If you want to do a cultural trip, I would suggest going in the winter, when there aren't crowds. When you are in Paris, there aren't many places where you can see the Eiffel Tower. All the buildings are about seven stories, so you are always in a canyon.

In the country, retail shops (including grocery and pasty shops) are open from morning to noon. They all close and the restaurants open for two hours. The restaurants close and retail re-opens. Hard to find a restaurant at 2:05. Sunday afternoon and almost everything is closed.

For the first time I noticed that in appliance and decor stores that the appliances are now sized to what you would find in the US. You even see large outdoor BBQ kitchens.

Brody Commission

Brody is done. This was a fun painting to do. Brody has his ice cream novelties (I've always love the term ice cream novelties). The tag line next to Brody reads "So Sweet and a Little Nutty". The little green ball with feet and the flower on the right are Brody's favorite toys.

Today I took the painting to the photographer, Ken Wagner, in Seattle and I'll pick up this Brody painting in a few days and ship him to Chicago where Brody lives. Ken Wagner will take a 4 x 5 transparency and then scan the transparency. I'll get a disk in addition to the transparency. When I get disk with the image, I'll post a better image.

After I get the scan, I'll then alter the image to make an image for limited edition prints and products. It will then be Husky Bars. I'll then post the print image.

Commissions can be directed to a specific dog or cat, like Brody Bars or it can be a generic commission for a breed. A couple of years ago, I painted Akita Green Tea for a tea shop in Kyoto, Japan. This wasn't a specific Akita it was a compilation of a couple of Akitas.

Ken Wagner does the photography for many artists, artisans and galleries in Seattle. He has a studio that is always set up and ready to go. He works fast and his pricing is quite reasonable. He better never retire.

Brody Commission

Here is Brody, a Siberian Husky and a very hansom boy. This is my first blog entry and the first time I've put the process I undertake to do commission.

Most of my blog entries will focus on commissions and paintings.

Here is the situation.

Brody's human perents have commissioned me to paint Brody and when done, I'll turn the image into a print series. For the prints, Brody's name will be replaced with Husky.

Brody's parents requests were that:

1. The background will match his beautiful blue eyes.

2. Brody's two toys a flower and a green ball be included.

The challenge was to come up with a product that made sense for a Siberian Husky. There are generally a few approaches to take when deciding a product.

I have a few requirements.

1. It must be a food or drink product.

2. It must make some sense for the breed. But that can be quite broad. For example, any dog

can be teamed with a Cafe or a cookie.

With some commissions it is a product that relates to something about the breed. For Malamute Smoked Salmon, I used smoked salmon because the Malamute is from Alaska and smoked salmon is a tasty Alaskan food product.

Sometimes it relates to the owners interest, wines, coffee, etc

With Brody, the idea of Ice Cream Bars came to mind.....a frozen treat.....Siberia is cold.

Brody parents liked the idea and they took it a step further. They like peanut butter and chocolate.

So the main copy on the painting will read.
